In the last decade there has been a huge push towards flat screen TVs, and now we are seeing the next exciting step in the development of the home TV and movie industry. We are now seeing the increasing use of 3D TVs in the home setting.
3D technology is not new. Movie theatres began employing red green 3D decades ago, but this was never particularly effective as the red green glasses tended to negatively effect the colour of the film. Still, the effect was exciting and people wanted more, with better effects.
As technology progressed we moved onto more natural, and realistic looking 3D. Modern 3D movies now use polarised glasses in order to view an image that was produced in two slightly different angles at the same time. The lenses in the glasses block out the unwanted angle from each eye, and give a resulting image that is clear, and has the same beautiful colour as it was produced in.
Bringing 3D into the home faced several stumbling blocks. The majority of 3D displays require the use of special glasses, that man people find uncomfortable to use in the long term.
Worse-people who already wear spectacles may find them almost impossible.
The growing popularity of 3D, spurred on by the use of 3D in cinemas, helped to overcome the dislike of the glasses and so soon small numbers of people began to bring these sets home. Every person who wanted to watch something in 3D had to have their own pair of glasses, but the glasses were not needed to watch normal shows.
Newer 3D TV sets no longer require the use of the special glasses. A variety of different techniques are used to produce the effect without glasses, and all have their limitations.
These TVs are limited in size, with some manufacturers having only 12 and 14 inch sets available but larger sets will be available as the technology improves and is able to support the larger screen sizes. Even more restrictive is the viewing conditions.
There is only a limited area in front of the TV where a viewer can sit to watch. The maximum distance from the set is only a few feet, and viewing angle is equally limited. Larger sets will ultimately allow the viewer to sit further away, and will accommodate more viewers at a time.
Not everything is available in 3D of course, but then that is not a problem. Where 2D inputs are used (such as ordinary DVDs and TV input), the TV is backwards compatible. It is capable of showing high definition and standard definition versions of TV shows and movies just as well as it is capable of displaying 3D.
In the next few years we are likely to see a large increase in the number of movies and broadcast TV shows that are available in 3D, and an equally large increase in the range of 3D TVs available. And of course, as the technology marches forward, the prices will come down, making 3D in the home ever more affordable for all of us.

When considering which TV stand is best for you and the system for which you are choosing it, one of the most important considerations (after the size of the TV itself, of course) is going to be the audio system you have chosen to hook up to your television. If you are choosing a speaker system that includes multiple speakers, for instance, you will want to take that into consideration because more speakers will take up more shelf space.
For audio systems that include only two speakers – a left and a right speaker – choosing a TV stand is straightforward and involves simply making sure there is space on either side of your television to set the speakers, or that there is a shelf to hold them. It is also possible to get a simple TV stand that only holds the television and use shelves hung on the wall on either side of the set to mount your speakers. Having the speakers at the same level as your ears is a good plan, since this generally provides the best quality sound.
If you choose a surround sound system, you will have speakers on the TV stand as well as behind your seating and on both sides. This sort of sound system immerses viewers in the program, show, or movie and greatly enhances the experience.
A surround sound set usually has powerful loudspeakers at the front of the room, plus a subwoofer that is usually placed near the television (often underneath, if space allows) that need to be allowed for on your TV stand.
Some people prefer to get a “home theater in a box” set, which usually includes several large speakers, a subwoofer, connectivity, and other amenities. Sets like these will necessarily take up more space around your television set, so you might want to consider a larger stand for your TV.
On the other hand, if you have a wall mountable television that has good integrated speakers, you can choose a bracket instead, since speakers won’t be an issue. Your choices here include flush mount brackets and brackets that allow tilt. You can also use this option if you choose to use speakers that are wireless-capable.
Wireless audio systems are another choice if you prefer convenience and flexibility. Because you don’t have to worry about as many wires, you can place them in many more places than would otherwise be possible. While today’s “wireless” home theater systems are not yet completely wireless, they do greatly reduce the clutter of wires you have to work around when setting up your audio system. At the moment, however, wired sound quality still surpasses wireless sound in quality, so you are probably trading quality for convenience if you choose wireless. Nevertheless, choosing wireless speakers will still impact your space requirements, so you will still need to consider them when choosing your TV stand.
With the right sound system and the right TV and TV stand, your entertainment center will become your favorite place in the house and you will be able to relax and enjoy it!
For a long time the choices available when it came to purchasing a new TV set were limited. The larger screen sizes with a CRT (cathode ray tube) meant that the set itself was huge, and difficult to carry and place in the room because they were so imposing. The TVs themselves had just a few channels that were often hard to tune before pre-tuned channels were introduced, and often suffered from a fuzzy picture.
With the advent of flat screen TVs there opened up a world of options. No longer were large TVs housed in massive cases that needed an even larger cabinet or TV unit. Instead they were so slim that they could be housed almost anywhere and with such a huge range of sizes that it became possible to have anything from a small device to one that covered most of a wall.
At a depth of less than four or five inches, it became possible to mount your TV on a wall, or a bracket that was fitted onto the wall. This puts the TV set in a different place-out of the way and yet often commanding a position where it is easily seen.
Your choice of TV is as large as your choice of wall mount, with there being HD TVs that have higher resolution, greater depth of color and contrast, and amazing stereo sound, along with normal resolution flat screen TVs that work at basic broadcast quality, and even plasma screen technology.
There are a range of mounts for the TVs, some of which will accept a range of sizes and styles, and some of which will only accept very specific sizes or brands of TV. It is important that you choose your wall mount or TV bracket carefully, because an ill fitted or ill sized mount may lead to your TV slipping and falling-and expensive mistake to make with an otherwise inexpensive part of your set up. Additional features of the brackets mean that they can help you tilt your set to allow the best viewing angle possible or turn it to face a different direction altogether.
Flat screen TVs are making your home integration easier than ever. Computer controlled home entertainment centers are becoming increasingly easy to use and fully featured, and newer TVs allow the computer to be plugged straight into it. With a choice of inputs, you may have your computer, your DVD or Blu-Ray player, and your cable box all plugged into it, meaning that there is no messing around needed in order to switch between input devices. Some also come with their own digital tuner built in, allowing you to use the TV as a standalone unit, without any input source other than an antennae.
The introduction and falling price of the flat screen TV has brought a wealth of options to the home cinema. As technology continues to improve we can look forward to an even greater home viewing experience, especially now that 3D TV at home is becoming a more accessible reality.
